Picture of the Day

Foreign Policy recently pubhlished an online photo essay about Chongqing, an old Chinese village in the midst of a transformation into a modern, ultra-urban city.  The whole feature is fascinating, but this photo in particular really captures the urban growth that has sprung up around pockets of the historic former village.  The office and apartment buildings seem to be reaching up to touch the sky, and the temple appears to be nestled in underneath a wall of glass and steel, much as if it were in the middle of a wooded glen in the forest.

The most fascinating single sentence in this essay:  “The city expects to absorb 1 million urban residents each year for the next 10 years.”  Wow.  If that doesn’t capture the remarkable changes underway in China (urban growth, economic diversification, demographic change, etc.), I don’t know what does.
