Monday Mixtape

Vampire Weekend. Photo: AV Club

The songs on repeat on my iPod this week (a new weekly post?):

Vampire Weekend – Giving Up the Gun

One of the most infectious choruses of the year thus far, and a track that solidified Vampire Weekend’s status as more than a one-album college favorite.  And the video is hilarious.

Spoon – Got Nuffin’

Listen to this song while driving with the windows down.  A propulsive rhythm section underneath Britt Daniels’ most plaintive vocals on the new album make this an intelligent toe-tapper.

Yeasayer – Amblin’ Alp

Fatherly advice for the hipster generation.  Yeasayer channels their inner Animal Collective and Raffi at the same time.  And if that doesn’t have you curious, then I give up.

Beach House – Zebra

This Baltimore band wears their influences on their sleeve (Beach Boys, shoegazer, etc.), but manages to create music that sounds dream-like and sentimental while retaining pop sensibilities.

Local Natives – Wide Eyes

Local Natives sound like the Southern California answer to Fleet Foxes.  Vocal harmonizations by the un-bearded set – for those that would rather surf than wear flannel.

She & Him – Thieves

Zooey Deschanel was devastatingly cute before she released an album of 50’s throwbacks.  Suffice it to say, nothing has changed.  This is the lead single from the upcoming second album.

Florence + The Machine – You Got The Love (the xx Remix)

This is a little non-traditional in terms of remixes, with the xx lending vocals to a reconfigured harp-heavy Florence + The Machine track.  These are two of my newly-discovered favorite artists, and this informal collaboration is cool because it highlights the best of both artists, capturing evocative vocals and encasing them in an atmospheric swirl of minimalism.

jj – Are You in Vallda?

“Now that the summer is here”… probably a bit premature, but with the weather getting warmer it’s only right to have at least one song light enough to be carried along by strings and twinkly synths.

The Zombies – Time of the Season

An oldie, but still a great song for this time of year (or the season, nyuck nyuck nyuck).

Hot Chip – One Life Stand

This was the lead single of the album of the same name, but even though it’s a few months old by now it is too catchy to forget.  Stuck on repeat.

These songs are intended only to promote the artists mentioned – if you like a song, buy the album.
